Evolution of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
Artificial intelligence (AI) entails using computers to model and mimic intelligent behaviors as it focuses on the development and analysis of algorithms that emulate and execute intelligent behavior with minimal human involvement. This technique is used in building robots and other AI-powered machines. Robots are classified as computer programmed machines with the capability of performing multifaceted tasks automatically. In light of this, according to the report from the international federation of robotics, approximately 2.6 billion robots were working in different sectors as of 2019, with a projected growth of robot production of 13% annually (Webster, 139). Many industries globally are adopting AI-powered robotic machines in construction, manufacturing and notably in clearing disasters. This discourse seeks to expound on the evolution of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The evolution of the artificial intelligence realm has seen robots’ development with a possibility of emotional and thinking capability. There has been a shift from humans like robots to more sophisticated ones that control assembly lines in the manufacturing sector, offering a high degree of proficiency in handling tasks when properly programmed. The advent of robotics dates back to the 15th century. The Egyptians designed a water clock to measure time influence by the force of water flowing through it at a constant rate. This water clock was located in the Amenhotep tomb (Webster, 138). This was gradually followed by the humanoid drawn by Leonardo da Vinci with a mobility power. More humanoid robots were developed in the following years.
More advancements were primarily documented between the 19th and 2oth centuries as more sophisticated robots were created, and the popularity of robots increased. In 1921, Karel Capek, a Czech writer, introduced the robot idea in his script Rossum Universal Robots which revolved around robots designed to perform the unpleasant manual task; since then, the robot concept gained popularity, as it transitioned from the fictional robots to reality (locci et al, 268). In 1939, the first humanoid robot that weighed approximately 120 kilograms was showcased at the New York world’s fair. This was followed by the introduction of the three laws of robotics by Isaac Asimov in 1942. These laws shed more light on the Artificial intelligence in Robotics.
Moreover, many advancements were actively being introduced, and a breakthrough was witnessed in 1952 when Marvin Minsky created the first artificial neural network. It mimicked a rat that navigated a maze in search of food. This invention paved the way for the rise of industrial robotics. The era of industrial robotics was ushered in by the invention of a digitally programmed robot installed by General Motors in their manufacturing assembly line in 1961 (Ashrafian ,326). It was the brainchild of George Devol. More industrial robots’ developments followed suit with the invention of Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arms (SCARA) used in a lot of electronic industry for assembly, loading, and palletization tasks. The invention revolutionized the electronic industry globally (Kamali, 435).
Artificial intelligence has seen the revolution of the transportation and locomotives sector with the invention of autonomous vehicles. Manufacturing companies such as Tesla are investing a lot of money in the development of robotic driverless cars. This will change the commutation and maximizing on costs. The future of artificial intelligence and robotics will see the robots overhaul human functions by performing all the tasks in a business cycle from start to the end. The inventions era is far from over as robotics will revolutionize the medical, financial, industrial, banking transportation, environmental and other sectors (Perez, 12). However, the greatest beneficiary will be the manufacturing and notably the entertainment industry as they utilize highly intelligent robots in conducting their day-to-day tasks. Robots carry out tasks with immense precision and accuracy with minimal maintenance and supervision.
However, this evolution is not without a share of challenges. And ethical problems that remain a task to maneuver for the AI developers. As robots replace allot of human power in industries, many people are rendered jobless as robots have taken their place. Additionally, human dependency on robots is slowing the human’s mental capacities (Webster, 134). In the event of an error, while programming the robots, the aftermath of the consequences are detrimental and in most cases the incidents are irreversible. However, embracing change is essential; the technological revolution artificial intelligence promotes efficiency and increased productivity.
Conclusion
With the rapid developments in Artificial intelligence and robotics, there comes a time, soon, when robots will fully surpass human functions in the handling tasks from planning to delivery stage. The evolution era is far from over as more sophisticated robot inventions are yet to come. More AI-powered robots will automate most of the routine work carried out by humans, such as voice recognition and google search predictions. Furthermore, the industry. Additionally, machine learning algorithms will facilitate robots to counter and retort in real-time. Notably, there will be drawbacks in AI and robotic evolution, however, the positive impacts on humanity in terms of efficiency will be profound and farfetched .humanity will be compelled to adapt to the inevitable change in robotics and artificial intelligence paradigm.
