The forum focused on the discussion of water pollution and drought. The central questions addressed revolve around the leaky water mains and the lead pipes. The water losses into the ground were recently reported by NorthJercy.com to be at 25%, but the Ridgewood official said that it stood at 13.52% which is within the 15% benchmark that the company regards as accepted value. The company has the capability of supplying 12 gallons of water on a daily basis provided that all the wells are all functioning which is enough to meet the daily demand of 6 gallons in winter. However, during summer the consumption demand may reach 18 gallons. The figure is escalated through water irrigation. The company said they are going to set an ordinance limit of two days per week and rainfall detectors are supposed to be installed in the irrigation systems.
Regarding the presence of lead in water that exceeded the standards set by the Federal as per the test conducted 2012 June, the company said that the source of lead is from the lead service line. To solve the problem, the company is treating the water with the anti-corrosive phosphates. They are also willing to conduct tests on samples of water from residential houses and trace the source of lead should it be found to exceeds standards. This is because lead is detrimental to human health even if consumed in a small amount. Therefore, it is clear that the environmental issues addressed in the forum are water pollution from the lead service line and drought due to the low precipitation of the area. The impacts of the environmental issues are that water contaminated by lead is unhealthy for human lives because it hampers mental and physical development in children, learning problems, and disease attention span. In adults, it interferes with kidney and causes blood pressure, thus affects the community and society. The possible outcomes from the forum on the environmental issues already mentioned are control of the pollution and reduction of water losses. The environmental issues discussed affect our lives directly thus we should be aware of the information. From the forum, the future considerations in solving the problems are setting ordinance limit, use of rainfall sensors, and home water sample testing.
My option completely changed. It challenged me to be more cautious with everything in life. From the article, it came to my mind that even the water supplied by the water service providers may be contaminated. It means someone may get health complications from the very basic needs and utilities at home. Therefore, I highly recommend for other people, especially residents of the area, to read the article so that they may participate in the water sample testing to be sure of the safety on the water supplied to their residential homes.
