The article Information Security in loss figures, by the Kaspersky Team, is quite an informative piece. It touches on the aspect most organizations consider before acquiring an information security model. Kaspersky, for the longest time, has provided security prevention and mitigation measures for interested parties depending on their needs. Based on their experience, they must have had enough data that cut across large farms to single individuals. Therefore, their advice on information security not only relies on their understanding but that of companies that have endured incidents. Organizations indeed lose a lot of finances when they face an information breach. Believe it or not, the financial amount firms spend to recover from the incident is expected to increase over the next years. As far as incidents are unavoidable, it is only fair for firms to find measures to protect their reputation.
It is reasonable to agree with Kaspersky that employees and malware infections are the roots of the problem. This is a reasonable suspicion considering the inability of workers to identify attacks and react appropriately. Once employees start surfing the net, downloading, and opening files, the chances of a breach are high. The authors of this piece also remind readers that regardless of the financial amount, loss of customers is another loss incurred. With the ever-changing and reformed laws towards information security, companies are expected to report attacks that may have a recoil effect on their reputation. Having a data-protection officer working fulltime is the solution given to ease such burdens and ease the impact. It may cost a bit more to have additional staff, but it is worth the financial sacrifice if it means prevention from bigtime loses.
