The war on drugs is considered as a war on poor and minority women who are punished as victimizers and with little consideration for their personal histories of victimization. Women are greatly affected by the policies including the mandatory minimum sentences, the prosecution of low-level drug offenses and the increased severity in the conviction and imprisonment of women found with relationships with drug dealers and criminalization of women with drug addiction as well as those with mental health issues and histories of sexual abuse.
This treatment is brought about the fact that when women are left at the hands of the criminal justice system, they are victimized by the system which applies laws without making consideration to their gender and conditions they face daily in the sentencing and enforcement approach. Women of color who are poor, often bear the parental responsibility to raise their children and thereby dependent on the government provisions to satisfy their basic human needs. However, for women with drug convictions, there are governmental bans on the receiving of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families due to their drug conviction records.
Women are also unfairly affected by policies that are meant to punish members of a family involved in the criminal justice system. A woman living in a public house will be evicted when a member of the household is convicted of engaging in criminal activities. Also, people with criminal records are denied admission to public housing. In other cases, women are victimized by their partners or spouse in striking a deal that helps in the reduction of the partner or spouse sentence.

In conclusion, the war on drugs should be re-evaluated to deviate the progress from gaining a little success and affects the citizens of the country. The polices should be reformed to stop fighting the individuals and instead enforce policies that foster the mental and physical health from drug addictions and also provide better opportunities than dealing with drugs.
