Apart from their duty to prepare criminal cases, a prosecutor plays a vital role in investigating crime, regardless of the differences in fundamental legal principles across countries. In some nations, prosecutors have a general responsibility over investigation, while in others they have a more restricted role in conducting investigation. In this country, investigators take part in investigating violent crimes, especially homicides. For a prosecutor to have input, in the investigative phase of a violent crime, the police must notify him that a crime has taken place and a suspect is in custody. As such, the prosecutor can go to the crime scene so as to get a better understanding of the scene’s physical layout, learn about the details of the crime and investigation, meet witnesses and interrogate them, assist in collecting triage evidence and provide legal advice as matters arise (Reilly, 2019).
So as to solve charging matters in advance, some police officers notify the prosecutor when they want to arrest a suspect on violent crime to discuss the case and the evidence required for charging. As such, the prosecutor may assist in assessing if there is adequate probable cause to arrest the suspect and approve charges. If there is probable cause, the prosecutor may then draft the initial charges after an arrest. A prosecutor can provide valuable input about the kind of forensic evidence that can be gathered and tested (Hess, Orthmann & Cho, 2016). Notably, most prosecutors hold meetings to discuss and assess evidence in a violent crime-they present facts to the case to a group of senior prosecutors, who offer advice and suggestions for additional investigations. I believe that the current role that prosecutors play in investigating violent crimes is adequate. Therefore, they should neither player a bigger role nor a lesser role.
