Development and Preservation of Latent Fingerprints
Fingerprints are considered one of the most valuable forms of evidence because they are unique in a way. In most cases, fingerprints are found on objects found in a crime scene and are used in identifying suspects and link them to the weapons, object, or crime scene. Latent fingerprint residues are secretions of the eccrine or rather sweat, apocrine and sebaceous glands available on the nose, palm, and head. New technologies have been developed for detecting latent fingerprints, although the traditional method, which is the powdering method, is still in use up to date.
The other methods used in the past include iodine fuming, silver nitrate soaking, ninhydrin dipping, and powder dusting (Lyman, 2018). When these chemicals come into contact with chemicals available on residues of fingerprints like the fats and natural oils, the prints became visible. Nowadays, investigators have adopted the use of turmeric powder since it is safe to use. Other ways used in detection include digital imaging, AFIS, computer forensics, and IBIS. Latent fingerprint evidence is placed into two different categories: porous evidence like paper, cardboard, and unfinished wood, which readily allow preservation of latent fingerprints since the residue is soaked into the surface.
The second category is nonporous evidence like finished wood, glass, and plastics. The substances lie on the surface and are not soaked; therefore, they do not preserve the latent fingerprints. Other preservation methods include dusting and lifting fingerprints where the object is placed on a clean, flat surface; a dark or light fingerprint dusting powder is used depending on the surface’s color. Generally, positive fingerprint identification is achieved when the similarity between the inked fingerprint from a suspect and the latent print found at the crime scene makes a corresponding match.
