In this article, the author points out how Chicago remains one of the most congested regions in the USA. The fact that the situation is bound to get worse as time goes by is very alarming. It is estimated that the impact of the congestion has cost Chicago commuters more than commuters in any other part of the world. With economic implications of up to $8 billion as of 2010, a figure that is bound to increase by 2030 (Staley, 2012). This rise in congestion is caused by an increase in the rate of urbanisation within the city. There is also a higher demand for road use in the town than the road space can support. Travel demands have also increased within the region. The existing system is found to fail in the provision of north-south routes that by-pass the downtown area, northern parts of the county are also not well fed with road routes and even a failure to invest in essential road capacities for the western portions of the region.
The author clearly expresses the issue as well as strategies to combat the challenge such as the focusing of the government in extending the existing networks. Providing some strategic investments in the building new routes instead of demolishing the existing systems will go a long way in creating new routes that can ease up and improve regional access and traffic flow (Norton, 2011). Therefore, the addition of new capacity in critical areas of the network will alleviate the situation. The author also highlights that better management of the existing network through ITS technologies will help coordinate traffic better, addition of new roadways in the northern regions, as well as a connection between the north-south regions, will serve the area better and integrating transit into regional roadway network planning and programming will also come in handy for the state of Chicago (Staley, 2012).
