Person A: Person living in flood affected area
Person A lives opposite the Brisbane river, on a slight hill. They have only just moved to
Brisbane from Melbourne, and has not experienced a flooding event before. Flooding has
caused the power company to cut power to the area for safety reasons, with no indication of
when it will be restored. Person A is conserving battery on their devices, so is unable to scroll
through social media or download and read lengthy news posts. They need to look for quick,
reliable information about the flooding in their area, either by using their own eyes, speaking
to people they know who are in their local area or using the BOM app. Person A processes
these sources of information in order to ensure their own safety and the security of their
belongings.
Decision: Person A must decide whether to evacuate the area (with their car) now or to stay
for the duration of the flooding event.
Person B: Person who has parents living in flood affected area
Person B lives far away from flood prone areas in Brisbane. Person B moved to this area after
being severely impacted by the Brisbane floods in 2011. Person B’s elderly parents live in one
of the towns in northern NSW that has been severely affected by heavy rain and is forecast to
experience severe flooding. This person has unlimited access to power and internet, and is
constantly on social media and watching the news as they are worried about their parents.
Person B’s parents are not sure what to do and are asking Person B for advice.
Decision: Person B needs to decide whether to tell their parents to try to evacuate (which
comes with risks as roads are already flooding), or stay in place and wait out the event (which
also comes with risks).
