Wireless Data Transmission
Currently, wireless communication is the most popular technology for enabling two devices to communicate with each other. Besides using wires to connect devices, the use of electromagnetic waves has also made it possible to transmit information. The two main types of wireless transmissions are Infrared (IR) and Radio Frequency (RF) despite the field having other less popular types of transmissions. IR is said to be lower than light but higher than microwaves when their frequencies are evaluated. In other words IR has wavelengths longer than those of light but shorter than radio waves. RF transmissions, however, use electromagnetic waves as a form of communication. RF signals do not need a medium such as air to transmit as they move at the speed of light (Techplayon, 2017). Normally, there is a transmitter that initializes the RF communication by taking the digital data through various steps such as modifying, encoding, and converting it into an analog signal. The created analog signal is then fed to the transmitter which sends it to the antenna. During this state, the analog signal is amplified to reach a higher power level. IR on the other hand transmits digital packets over a single carrier frequency. Emitters are used for IR transmissions as they rely on the remote to send signals to the A/V device (Cable Wholesale, n.d.). Emitters can be found in dual or single packages with the dual emitting the same signal through separate devices. All in all, wireless transmissions have enabled society to do away with excessive cabling.
