Discussion 1
• Select one of the topics listed below. You are not answering the question in each topic, rather exploring information to make connections. No one has the answers but the more you engage with these types of questions, the more you will understand the meaning of philosophy.
o Topics to consider:
 What is the meaning of life?
 What is knowledge (and how do we attain it)?
 What is real?
• Give a brief explanation for why you selected the topic that you did. Possibilities include:
o Why is this question interesting to you?
o What personal connections do you make with this topic? Why?

Discussion 2
Some people define themselves by their possessions, religious beliefs, abilities, or other factors. “Defining yourself” is a topic about which you may have a difficult time thinking objectively. Part of understanding philosophy is knowing how you view the world. This will be key to your assignments later in the course.
For this week’s discussion, choose one question below and respond in 5–7 sentences:
• Describe how you define yourself to others. Be specific.
• Describe how you define yourself to yourself. Be specific.
