This assessment requires you to demonstrate your understanding some of the concepts covered in this topic including power, the past and present history of colonisation, white privilege, racism, decolonisation and culturally responsiveness and begin thinking about their implications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples and social work practice.
Your use of language is very important, so please be very aware when preparing assessments. This includes the need for the use of capitals (for example Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) and NOT using abbreviations (eg do not use the term ATSI). Please adopt a strength-based approach and do NOT use language that blames the individual but rather recognizes the structural origins of the social issues. These practices align with ethical social work practice.
Instructions of assessment
The assessment requires that you prepare an essay using quality references to support your claims. Please answer the following question:
‘What can social workers learn from the past, and how can they apply these lessons to the future engagement/relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?’
Please make sure to include the following points in the essay.
This essay should consider the past and present impact of colonisation and the contemporary perception of social work services among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Considering for example concepts of power, white privilege, racism, their influences and how they impact social work practice. Reflect upon how the lessons from the past can be applied to future engagement/relationships with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, for example (but not exclusive to), practicing cultural responsiveness, self-awareness, and by decolonising social work practice.
