Metropolis
Metropolis is a fascinating and sensational German silent film released in 1927 by Australian director Fritz Lang. The film is still considered the first great science fiction to date. Featuring Lang’s vision of a futuristic society, the film tells of an emotional story of the 21st-century city of Metropolis and the struggles between two classes of people in the society resulting from advancement in science and technology. Fritz employs exhilarating and innovative imagery, which has since played a significant role in developing the science fiction genre. Many more films have in different ways employed the unique and dazzling style in Metropolis, including Dark City, The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Gattaca, Escape from L.A, Batman’s Gotham City, among others.
Two distinct classes of people inhabit the great city of Metropolis. The rich and pampered citizens who live in opulence and luxury on the surface and the underclass on the hidden part of the city who toil to support Metropolis and maintain the lives of the affluent. The city is run by a self-centered and ruthless man Joh Fredersen. This oppressive and dictatorial rulership eventually results in conflict between the two classes.
It begins one day when Freder, the son of Joh Fredersen, meets Maria, a woman from the subterranean part of the city when she brings with her a group of the worker’s children to the surface. Maria’s beauty captures Freder, but he is also astonished to discover the life lead by the workers and vows to try and convince his dictatorial father, Joh Fredersen, to change the oppressive regime. He goes ahead to seek help from Rotwang, a genius who is more accustomed to the secrets of the other world.
The conflict is further intensified when Freder falls in love with Maria, an activist who is at the front line fighting against the divide between the two classes. Joh even collaborates with a loony scientist to create a robot duplicate of Maria in an attempt to stop the workers from rebelling. Religious allusions also dominate the film. Maria is depicted as Virgin Mary while her evil robotic duplicate suggests the whore of Babylon, Freder plays the role of Christ as he attempts to reconcile the two classes while his father Joh is portrayed as a self-imposed Jehovah who takes up Metropolis as his world and even punishes his people with a flood when they go against his rules.
The film, like any other, has its weaknesses. Since its initial release in 1927, the film has since been edited, restructured, and sliced up several times over the years. The final and the latest version comes with a quarter of the original version still missing. However, the Metropolis remains a powerful, astounding, mesmerizing silent film of all time.
