Mr. X is 19 y/o sophomore in college. He was recently found guilty of sexual assault and is currently incarcerated. Five months ago he and his roommates had a large party at their house. Everyone was drinking and having fun. Mr. X met Ms. Y and they started talking. A few hours later, the two went to Mr. X’s room and begin “making out”. This went on for about 20 minutes, and Mr. X became sexually aroused. He wanted to have sex, and believed Ms. Y wanted to have sex, as well. During his pre-sentence investigation he stated, “why would she come up to my room, make out with me, and lead me on if she didn’t want to have sex? She was giving me all the signs that she wanted it. Women play too many games. They’re always sending men mixed messages and then we’re the ones who get in trouble. It’s not fair!”

Mr. X took off his pants and began to take off Ms. Y’s pants, but she said “no.” He perceived her “no” as a “yes” (after all, according to him, she was giving him all the signs of wanting to have sex) and proceeded to take off her pants, push her onto the bed, and have sexual intercourse with her against her will. She did not fight back, but as soon as it was over, she got dressed and ran out of the room crying.

Mr. X shows up in your treatment program and it is your job to help him understand some of the causal mechanisms behind his offense. (Remember: Avoid using the first-person to explain your answer. Make your argument and support it with evidence)
