Dorothea Orem is considered as one of the most important nursing theorists, and her theory has been widely used in nursing practice and research. Dorothea Orem was born in 1914 in Baltimore, Maryland, and received her diploma in nursing in 1934 from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education in 1939, and a Master of Science in Nursing Education in 1945 from the Catholic University of America. She worked as a staff nurse, a nursing instructor, and as a consultant in nursing education. In the early 1950s, Orem began developing her Self-Care Deficit Theory, which was first published in 1971. Orem passed away in 2007 at the age of 92.
