Sometimes, the behaviors exhibits by adults are from childhoodexperience and upbringing. For instance children brought up in an environmentthat makes them feel worthwhile and valuable grew up to form a healthy andhappy relationship, while children brought up in an unhappy, and hustle familygrew up to form unsatisfying relationship as adult. “Dysfunctional family is one which the relationship betweenthe parents and children are strained and unnatural”(Mudrashram institute ofspiritual studies, website, n.d). While a functional family is where there is peace,happiness, trust, and supportive  relationship  between parents and children.  A dysfunctional or functional family can be identified  by the nurse either through covert or overtobservation and this can be noted through actions, words, and attitude offamily members during hospital stay or home visit to assess and provide care to a patient.Dr  Janet Kizzar characterizes four types of” troubled family system” which are breeding groundfor codependency. And they are –( 1) The alcoholic or chemically dependent family system.(2) The emotional or psychological disturbed family system.(3) The physically or sexually abusing family system.(4)  The religious fundamentalist or rigidly dogmatic family system  When one or more of these characteristic are noted in a family, thatfamily will be described as a dysfunctional, and when opposite  of these characteristic are noted in a family, that family will be described as a functional family.
