Course Project Description
When you have completed all of the units in the Study Guide, you will be ready to begin the course project. Although you may begin working on the project at any time during the course, you will find that you will need to have studied all the units to complete the project. The course project is worth 30% of your overall grade for the course.
Purpose
The purpose of the course project is for you to apply the knowledge you acquired throughout the course to a case study. Review the brief sketch below of students, teachers, parents, and a school setting. To complete the project, you will need to refer to the course material, and apply the concepts and strategies from each of the units.
Writing the Project
Your project should be of high quality, and must demonstrate an integration of the material covered in the course. Make your project comprehensive; for example, include a number of assessment strategies rather than just one. You may use outside materials, but the textbook and the readings contain the essential information for this project.
Your project should include a title page containing the name of the assignment, your name, course name, date, and your tutor’s name. Your project should be a minimum of 12 pages in length.

Background Information
You have been hired by the Calgary Public School Board as a resource teacher at an elementary/junior high school. The school has 16 teachers and 325 students: 150 students at the elementary level and 175 at the junior high level. The school principal has indicated to you that she is interested in establishing some form of consultation and collaboration in the school. In the past, students with special needs have been referred by the staff to special education placements in other schools. Students experiencing learning and behavioural difficulties, who could not be placed in a district program, were pulled out to the resource room. The former resource teacher worked independently, with little or no interaction with the other teachers.
The files of two students are on your desk for review, and include the following information.
Student: William Perry
Parents: Nancy and Don Perry
Home Room Teacher: Mr. Jones
William is a thirteen-year-old boy with attention deficit disorder and undiagnosed learning difficulties. He is working in the Grade 7 classroom, with limited success. One of the biggest changes for William this year is that he has several teachers and class changes, which is quite different from the elementary grades. Although William is on medication, which is time-reacted to wear off by the end of the school day, he struggles to keep pace with his peers. William often forgets books and homework either at school or at home, and is behind in getting his work completed. William tends not to perform very well on most tests. He has trouble with visual motor tasks, and finds written work to be very difficult. He is also not able to read the instructions very well. William’s parents report that it takes William twice as long to complete his homework than it takes his friends to do the same work. William is not a behaviour problem in the classroom, and he is quite a pleasant young boy. He spends his time in class daydreaming and fiddling with anything he can get his hands on. He does not have many friends with whom he can socialize after school, and is often responsible for babysitting his younger sister. William’s parents are concerned that the medication is not working as effectively as it did in the past. William’s dad is also concerned as he and his son spend a lot of time arguing and fighting over homework and chores.
Student: Janna Small
Parents: John and Tina Small
Teacher: Mrs. Ballance
Janna is eight years old, and is in a Grade 3 class. Mrs. Ballance is concerned about Janna’s behaviour in class, and does not know how to deal with her effectively. Janna was identified as having some learning challenges in Grade 1, but her behaviour has become increasingly difficult to deal with. Janna has mood swings, and tries to dominate conversations with peers and adults. She talks out of turn in a loud voice, and often says inappropriate things. She will sometimes get separated from the class during a move down to the gymnasium, as she is easily distracted by posters and artwork on the walls. Janna enjoys sharing her knowledge about birds, as she knows a lot of specific information on that topic. Overall, Janna is not performing well in school, and although she perseveres on certain topics of great interest to her, it is very difficult for her to get on task in areas that do not interest her as much. She is also generally difficult to keep on task, and needs a lot of cuing to be quiet. Janna’s parents are increasingly concerned about her isolation from peers. The other students in Janna’s class tend to make fun of her and not include her in activities. Janna’s parents think that Janna’s problems are the result of the teacher’s inability to manage behaviour, and the fact that Janna is being bullied.
