. Many citizens have called for the resignation of the Sheriff Jim Beiker as well as a department
“flush-out”in order to restore trust of the citizens of Fremont County, Colorado(Harmon,2017).
The actions of several members of the Fremont County Sheriffs Department has left a once
small, close-knit community divided. The purpose of this paper is to bring forth the damaging
effects to a community when those who are sworn to “Protect & Serve” do the opposite. Lies,
murder evidence found in a storage unit, rape evidence found at the dump, charges filed without
evidence, releasing criminals to be informants who then commit murder, a private Facebook
group used to call out citizens, and the list goes on. Now, 14 Fremont County Sheriffs are on paid
administrative leaveWill this be what it takes to reestablish trust and bring this community back
together?
Effects on the Community
The most harmful effect of corruption is the decrease in public trust of the police is that it causes
a deterioration in relations between citizens and officers and, as a result, reduces the
effectiveness of policing in a community(Syed,1997). Evidence from a 10-year-old unsolved
murder was discovered in an auctioned-off storage locker. The locker belonged to Lieutenant
Robert Dodd.
Soon after this discovery, he retired and moved to Texas. Within the same week,
more evidence was found at the city dump. The evidence from the dump came from a dumpster
that was rented to Robert Dodd(French,2017). The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was called
in to examine the evidence. The public became disgruntled, especially the family of the
murdered 17-year-old girl. The girl’s mother claimed that the police report was fabricated and the
