“An Unreal Dream” film describes the false conviction of a man known as Michael Morton

“An Unreal Dream” film describes the false conviction of a man known as Michael Morton. Michael’s arrest occurred in 1987. He was an Austin grocery store inventory manager. He was arrested while at his home for an alleged wife battering. Michael had a 3-year-old son who in the film gives information to an investigator that his father was not at home when his mother was killed.
The boy describes the man who was responsible for his mother’s death as a “monster”. Ken Anderson who was the prosecutor, deliberately refused to submit this conversation with Michael’s son meant to be evidence that Michael did not kill his wife. He is portrayed as having malicious motives in this case.
ln Michael’s story, the evidence that was supposed to prove him innocent was hidden. The judicial system refused to run tests on his DNA evidence of the bandana to prove if he was as innocent as he claimed. There is a problem with the judicial system. They only wanted to take shortcuts in the whole process and the only way was to ensure they won. The judicial system is portrayed as hungry for power because they denied justice for Michael even with clear evidence proving his innocence.
lf the judicial system is not reviewed, this could happen to many others arrested and convicted when innocent. ln the film, Michael’s wife was brutally murdered as his son watched. The son had mentioned in an interview that Michael, his father was not at home when that happened but the judiciary discarded that part during the search for evidence.
Michael was then arrested and convicted. At this point, he tried making appeals and hearings that failed every time. Later he was sentenced to life imprisonment. This is where the judicial system proved to have failed. Michael was innocent but the system put him behind bars even without examining the DNA evidence.
During the process of law enforcement, the justice system in the film gave a wrongful conviction. This is when Michael was sentenced to life imprisonment despite claims of being innocent. The DNA investigative technique was newly introduced which was supposed to give accurate prove if a person was guilty or innocent. This law was not acted upon since Michael’s DNA sample was discarded without being tested.
When the defense lawyer is ineffective, the prosecutors tend to be unfair. ln this film, the prosecutor, Ken Anderson, withheld the information which was meant to help Michael prove his innocence. That clearly shows how the prosecutor had ill motives in this case. The defense attorney; John Raley, put a lot of effort to locate the evidence and present it so that the system could reverse Michael’s false conviction.
The judge who was in charge of the trial was given the concerns raised by the defense lawyer about the hidden evidence. He then ordered the prosecutors to turn in all the reports concerning this evidence. Too much information had been withheld that denied Michael the justice he desperately needed. lt seems like the prosecutor, in this case, had more power compared to the lawyers.
Several occasions that happened made Michael get convicted for murder.

Several occasions that happened made Michael get convicted for murder. After his wife was found dead, police found a bandana which was full of blood at a construction site just a few yards from his home. His wife’s mother said to the police that Michael was present when his wife was killed. His son clearly stated that Michael was not at home and the man who killed his mother was described as a ‘monster’. Michael’s neighbors also said that the man who killed Christine parked a green van repeatedly across the street. The prosecutor said Michael killed his wife after she refused to submit to him the night after his birthday. (Morton, M. 2015). Reforms should be made to the justice system. Some of these are; changing the rules and the entire composition of the system including those in authority. This will help to eliminate the corrupt and biased cartels in the system.
Some favor the wealthy and some discriminate against a certain race or ethnicity. Michael suggests that there should be an affidavit presented to prosecutors to show that they have submitted all the evidence. Failure to that, the prosecutor loses his license or pays a fine. ln Michael’s case, his prosecutor, Ken Anderson, was sentenced to 10 days in prison for withholding the evidence. Justice was served right. When Norwood, Christine’s murderer was arrested and convicted, Michael was compensated with a sum of $1.9 million. He was then awarded $12,000 as a monthly annuity. He deserves all this compensation because being locked up for 25 years for a wrongful accusation is not easy. He lost his child, his wife his job and so much productive time. The compensation was awarded to him by the Supreme Court after Michael’s lawyer requested the attorney. (Garrett, B. L. 2017). There are so many people like Michael Morton who get wrongfully convicted every time.
The judicial system has to enforce the newly amended laws that take care of issues of overlooking evidence or withholding delicate information regarding a case in progress. The Supreme Court has lost millions of dollars to compensating prisoners who were wrongfully convicted due to negligence or malicious selfish motives of some cartels in the judicial system.
